The children love to play soccer! Even the young child gets in on the action. Very close to the shelter, there is a privately owned soccer pitch that is rented by the hour. One of the children told Tesfa, “When I am on the soccer field, I feel like I am free and flying like a bird”. Another child told Tesfa about their love for soccer, “When I score a goal and when my friends cheer me up, I become very happy and proud of myself."  In an hour, the children take turns playing, so they all have a turn. It’s not only fun, but it is also a great source of exercise.

For all children in kindergarten through to grade 12 living at or supported through Tesfa’s Shelter, they are required to wear a uniform to school. If they do not have a uniform, they cannot attend school. A school uniform is more than a necessity; it is a symbol of hope and opportunity. It tells each child that they are part of something important- that they belong in the classroom and have a future worth investing in.

Christmas, Ramadan, Easter, Canada Day and the Team Tesfa Awards are occasions that all the children celebrate at Tesfa’s Shelter. They enjoy special foods like meat, doro watt (a spicy chicken stew), boiled eggs, cake and special drinks. Tesfa and the children decorate the shelter for each special occasion to make it extra festive.

Government school education is significantly inferior to a private school education in Ethiopia. Students in private school perform much better on their grade 12 national exam, which determines if they will be able to go to university. Tesfa’s Shelter, which is a project of Hagar Yager Lij Charity Association, is a place of provision, safety, comfort, guidance, care, education, a family and most importantly love.  Extreme poverty has resulted in children living at the shelter or supported through the shelter.  Sponsorship ensures the child has everything they need, education to give them a hope for the future and a home.  Sponsors receive a profile of the child they sponsor and regular updates.

Too many women in Ethiopia are unable to work due to medical conditions that are debilitating but easily treated with a small amount of money.  In an effort to restore women's dignity, hope for the future and welfare, and to reduce the number of children abandoned and orphaned, Wellness for Women assesses and treats women medically and psychologically. Without health, a woman is not able to provide for herself or her children.

The women in the Wellness for Women project, with the guidance of the project staff, choose which small business they would like to start after graduating from the training. Normally, the women choose something they are familiar with. In Ethiopia, women, like the women in the project, are unable to get a loan from the bank for any reason. Hearts for Ethiopia provides the equipment and supplies for the women to start their own businesses and, in time, become financially independent.

For women with uterine prolapse living outside of Soddo, transportation can be a roadblock to visiting the hospital to have an evaluation and treatment. Many women who have had surgery have walked hours to get to a rural clinic for evaluation. Extreme poverty can and does result in women not accessing medical care because they cannot get to the hospital. A small amount of money allows women to access medical care and have transportation home when the surgery is completed. Surgeries for uterine prolapse is a project of Soddo Christian Hospital.

In Ethiopia, many women suffer from uterine prolapse. Suffering from a prolapse affects every aspect of life and results in physical pain and suffering and social isolation that leads to psychological pain. For most women in Ethiopia, the cost of surgery is completely out of their ability to pay. The surgery that would cost more than $5000 in Canada is completed at a fraction of the cost at the Soddo Christian Hospital in Ethiopia, giving women back their dignity, a hope for the future, and freedom from suffering. Surgeries for uterine prolapse is a project of Soddo Christian Hospital.
